What should I do when firmware update fails?

Please try the following to update firmware.

• a. Restarting the computer
• b. Changing the USB setting for the scanner (when using fi-8190/fi-8290/fi-8170/fi-8270/fi-8150/fi-8250)

a. Restarting the computer

When connection between the computer and the scanner is unstable, in rare cases firmware update may fail with the following message.

Firmware update via update tool The firmware cannot be updated.

Firmware update via Online Update Failed to update the firmware.

In that case, try again the firmware update. If it still fails, please follow the steps below.

<Steps>

1. Quit the firmware update tool.
   
   

2. Restart the computer.
   Note:
   Do not run any software using the scanner until firmware update is complete.
   When a scan application (such as PaperStream ClickScan) starts up during startup of the computer, disable the automatic startup of the scan application in advance.
   
   

3. Update the firmware again.

 

b. Changing the USB setting for the scanner (when using fi-8190/fi-8290/fi-8170/fi-8270/fi-8150/fi-8250)

When connection between the computer and the scanner is unstable, in rare cases firmware update may fail with the following message.

Firmware update via update tool The firmware cannot be updated.

Firmware update via Online Update Failed to update the firmware.

When the firmware update still fails even after tried again or when the Operator Panel shows the following status, please follow the steps written below.

<Steps>

1. Quit the firmware update tool.
   
   
2. Turn off the scanner, and then turn it on again.
   

   Note:
   When the scanner is not turned off by pressing the [Power] button, unplug the power cable.
   
   
3. Using the USB change tool below, change the USB setting for the scanner to [USB 2.0].
   
   How to use USB change tool

   1. Download the zip file from this page and unzip it.
   2. Double click USBChangeTool_*-*-*-*.exe to extract the tool (USBChangeTool.exe).
   3. Run USBChangeTool.exe in the extracted folder.
   4. The setting window appears to show the current USB operation mode. Select [USB 2.0] and click the [Apply] button.
   5. When the “Successfully switched” message appears, click the [OK] button to close the window.
4. Update the firmware again.
